MOT History Check | Steps to Buying a Car | by Marcus Rockey The Used Car Guy

An MOT history check is something I carry out on every single used car I buy. More info here.

The benefits of this check include mileage verification and to see what is likely to fail on the cars next MOT. The MOT history check works so well because it's free and you should be able to run the check before you go and look at the vehicle you plan to buy. If you find problems you have wasted nothing more than a little time and potentially saved yourself a lot of money.

There are lots of important steps to take when buying a used car and my website used car buying guide for all the information you can possibly need to buy a car that's genuine reliable and excellent value for money.

Vehicle Check | HPI Check | The Used Car Guy's Car Checks by The Used Car Guy

Vehicle Check and HPI Check specialist information for private car buyers that need to run an independent car check in the UK.

My definitive guide to running a vehicle check (specifically an HPI Check) can be found using this link. You'll find a unique video provides a step by step guide to running HPI Checks on any used car within the UK. Most car buyers will understand the importance of running a car check but there is still some misunderstandings about which information to pay attention to that ensures a safe purchase. There is also incorrect information surrounding car accident checks, so I decided to explain all of the detail so you can avoid any mistakes. A vehicle check tells you a huge amount about the history of a used car but there are four elements that really determine if it's safe to buy a particular car and avoid wasting your hard earned money.
  1. Has the vehicle ever been stolen? If a car has be stolen and is recorded on the Police National Register an HPI Vehicle Check will show a red flag. Any vehicle that you investigate as stolen must not be bought. It's best to report the car to the Police so they can take measures to recover the vehicle.
  2. Is there a mileage discrepancy? With car clocking on the rise again in the UK it's crucial to know if a car is genuine mileage or not. Using the National Mileage Register, an HPI Check can often tell you if the vehicle is genuine miles or not. Any car with a discrepancy must either be further investigated or you should simple walk away from the vehicle.
  3. Is there any outstanding car finance, Higher Purchase, PCP, Lease Purchase or some other financial arrangement against the vehicle? If you buy a car with outstanding finance you may well be liable to settle the finance agreement should you buy the car. This startling fact is law and can/will be enforced against you by the finance company who expect to be settled in full. If any car you're interested in buying has money owed on it you must get a full settlement letter before you make the purchase. A vehicle check may highlight a stocking loan ( where the car is loaned to a dealership on sale or return SOR.). The car is owned by the finance group and they have permitted a car dealership to sell the car on their behalf for a commission. Once the car is sold the car dealers pay the finance company and settle the money owed. In cases like this you should contact the finance company and request a settlement letter by email or hard copy. If your HPI check shows money outstanding do NOT buy that vehicle without further investigation.
  4. Is the car a category C or D insurance total loss right off? An HPI Vehicle Check will let you know if the car has ever been written off. But any car check can only give you information that's been recorded against the vehicle. If the car was involved in an accident that was settled outside of the insurance company the HPI Check will not be able to disclose it. So be mindful that the car you are buying may still have endured a major accident even through your vehicle check states the car is free from major accidents. All the additional information contained in a car history check is of less importance to the points listed above. Previous owners, colour changes, plate transfer changes via DVLA etc are all important but not critical to know. https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/driver-and-vehicle-licensing-agency

DPF Filters How to Cure Your Sick Car For Free!

5/5/2016

DPF Filters – How to Cure Your Sick Car For Free! DPF Removal? Driving without a DPF Filter can be against the law and quite unnecessary Diesel particulate filters (DPF) are placed on the exhausts of diesel vehicles to prevent toxic emissions from flowing into the environment. So, why are so many diesel car owners removing them and why haven’t sites, such as eBay, Google, and Gumtree, banned advertisements for these services? I will tell you how you can regenerate your DPF Filter without spending  a penny. More on that in a moment… Already, more than 1,000 diesel car owners have been caught removing the filter, though experts believe that the problem is much more prevalent. Recently, campaigners have started to voice their complaints to the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA). They argue that allowing advertisements for DPFs is breaking the ASA code, which bans motoring “practices that condone or encourage anti-social behaviour”. The adverts are exploiting a loophole in the law, which states that driving a diesel car without a DPF is an offence, yet the actual act of removing it is not. In the past week, MPs have labeled air pollution to be a “public health emergency”. In fact, particulate pollution is responsible for between 40,000 and 50,000 early deaths in the UK each year. Despite this, many repair garages throughout the UK continue to offer to remove DPFs. MPs have labelled this practice as “clearly detrimental to people’s health” and “unacceptable”.   Why Are People Removing DPFs? These filters easily become clogged, especially when driven by vehicles in the city. Town and city cars will often be driven at low speeds in residential areas without ever getting a motorway run that can often unclog the DPF filter and regenerate it. Replacements tend to be expensive, which is why many of the UK’s top garages have offered to take them off completely. Google and Gumtree have stated that they accept these adverts because the actual removal service itself is not against the law. Since 2014, any diesel vehicle missing a diesel particulate filter automatically fails the MOT. In late April, the Guardian revealed that so far 1,188 vehicles have been caught without a DPF. However, some garages in the area post on their websites that they can beat the visual MOT check.   Friends of the Earth (FoE) Founded in 1971, FoE is a federation of 74 groups from all over the world who are dedicated to saving the environment. One of their primary causes involves complaining to the ASA about the prevalence of adverts for DPF removal services. In a press release from 2 May 2016, FOE air pollution campaigner, Oliver Hayes, stated, “Air pollution is a public health crisis of breath-taking proportions. The dodgy practice of removing pollution filters from cars is not only risking people’s health, but also putting drivers at risk of prosecution for the simple fact that it’s illegal to drive a car with its DPF removed.” He went on to say, “We’re asking the ASA to clamp down on those advertising these dubious practices … […]
