My definitive guide to running a vehicle check (specifically an HPI Check) can be found using this link. You'll find a unique video provides a step by step guide to running HPI Checks on any used car within the UK. Most car buyers will understand the importance of running a car check but there is still some misunderstandings about which information to pay attention to that ensures a safe purchase. There is also incorrect information surrounding car accident checks, so I decided to explain all of the detail so you can avoid any mistakes. A vehicle check tells you a huge amount about the history of a used car but there are four elements that really determine if it's safe to buy a particular car and avoid wasting your hard earned money.
- Has the vehicle ever been stolen? If a car has be stolen and is recorded on the Police National Register an HPI Vehicle Check will show a red flag. Any vehicle that you investigate as stolen must not be bought. It's best to report the car to the Police so they can take measures to recover the vehicle.
- Is there a mileage discrepancy? With car clocking on the rise again in the UK it's crucial to know if a car is genuine mileage or not. Using the National Mileage Register, an HPI Check can often tell you if the vehicle is genuine miles or not. Any car with a discrepancy must either be further investigated or you should simple walk away from the vehicle.
- Is there any outstanding car finance, Higher Purchase, PCP, Lease Purchase or some other financial arrangement against the vehicle? If you buy a car with outstanding finance you may well be liable to settle the finance agreement should you buy the car. This startling fact is law and can/will be enforced against you by the finance company who expect to be settled in full. If any car you're interested in buying has money owed on it you must get a full settlement letter before you make the purchase. A vehicle check may highlight a stocking loan ( where the car is loaned to a dealership on sale or return SOR.). The car is owned by the finance group and they have permitted a car dealership to sell the car on their behalf for a commission. Once the car is sold the car dealers pay the finance company and settle the money owed. In cases like this you should contact the finance company and request a settlement letter by email or hard copy. If your HPI check shows money outstanding do NOT buy that vehicle without further investigation.
- Is the car a category C or D insurance total loss right off? An HPI Vehicle Check will let you know if the car has ever been written off. But any car check can only give you information that's been recorded against the vehicle. If the car was involved in an accident that was settled outside of the insurance company the HPI Check will not be able to disclose it. So be mindful that the car you are buying may still have endured a major accident even through your vehicle check states the car is free from major accidents. All the additional information contained in a car history check is of less importance to the points listed above. Previous owners, colour changes, plate transfer changes via DVLA etc are all important but not critical to know. https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/driver-and-vehicle-licensing-agency
